Computer doesn’t boot / BSOD

Summary
This is a symptom of many different potential problems, and we’ll need to spend some time with your drive or computer to determine what the problem actually is and what can be done to work around it and recover your data.

The Situation
For some reason, your computer no longer boots. If it’s a Windows machine it may give an invalid boot disk error, or no operating system found error. Sometimes it will start to boot but not finish, and sometimes continue to try rebooting unsuccessfully. With Macintosh systems, the most common problem will be the dreaded folder-with-question-mark icon, a gray cancel sign, or sometimes a gray screen with progress bar that never ends or finishes.

In short, this can be caused by just about any type of hard drive or SSD problem. The drive may be completely dead and inaccessible, or there might only be some small issues preventing the drive or computer from booting properly.

The Solution
Sometimes drives with these symptoms aren’t too bad, but other times the damage causing the symptom can be severe. The only way for us to find out and know is to physically examine your drive or computer. The good news is that the evaluation is free assuming you’re ready to approve a best-case-scenario quote for the size and type of drive in question.
